History of Deviance

Page by Sarah Dye

These pages will explore the development of the study of deviance. I will do this through the periods of thought that occurred during the development of the study of deviance. The study of deviance was very popular in America from the late 1800’s to the mid 1060’s.  The history of deviance is typically divided into three periods of thought:

The first two periods listed, Social Pathology and Social Disorganization, were not at the time seen as being specifically in the field of deviance study, as the area did not exist until after World War I.  Even though two periods were not as focused on deviance as the later two they are stepping stones that contributed to deviance becoming it’s own area of study.
